Background: Globally, there is evidence of increased Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use during epidemics, and pandemics. Recent studies have shown that there is an increased use of CAM during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The aim of the study was to investigate the pattern of CAM practice in the prevention of COVID-19 pandemic among adults in Kerala state, India.Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study conducted in the first week of June 2021 among adults residing in Kerala state. The study used a pre-tested google form to collect the data. A total of 548 individuals aged 18-84 years answered an online questionnaire for the present study.Results: A higher proportion (52.4%) of participants were aged <30 years, 30.8% were males, 55.3% rural residents, 26.6% health care professionals, and 51.1% had a regular income. CAM use prevalence was 59.3% (95% CI: 55.1 to 63.3). Social media (46.9%) was the most frequently reported source of CAM. The age-adjusted analysis results showed that CAM use was higher among health professionals (OR: 2.15, 95% CI: 1.41-3.27), those who did not believe that vaccine could prevent coronavirus (OR: 1.91 CI: 1.08-3.39), and those who were having no regular income (OR: 1.56, CI: 1.04-2.34), compared to their counterparts.Conclusions: Close to 60% of CAM use in this population is a public health concern since the efficacy of CAM use for the prevention or treatment of COVID-19 is not known. The CAM users will be under a sense of false protection, which is likely to negate vaccination and seeking proper treatment for COVID -19 in Kerala.

The recent outbreak of COVID-19 is attributed to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). This viral disease is rapidly spreading across the globe, including India. The mainstay in managing the disease is supportive care, nutrition, and preventing further progression in the absence of proven antiviral drugs. Currently two vaccines Covishield and Covaxin are administered in India. Long-term plans of developing most reliable mRNA-based vaccines are also underway for the future method of prophylaxis. The Siddha system of medicine’s holistic approach emphasizes lifestyle modification, prophylactic interventions, and dietary management to boost the host immunity and treatment with herbal medicines and higher-order medicines as the case may be. In this review, a brief outline of the disease COVID-19, Coronavirus, evidence-based traditional Siddha interventions for respiratory ailments, immune boosters highlighting the relevant published research on individual herbs are dealt, which pave way for further research on drug repurposing for COVID-19. Historical evidence on the prevention and treatment of infections in Siddha classics is studied. Web search in databases such as Embase, Biomed Central Articles, Pub med, NLM, Web of Science CrossRef, Google scholar, AYUSH research portal, google search engine related to antiviral properties of herbs used in the preparation of Siddha drugs was also carried out.

This is to report 2 cases experiencing action of indigenous medicine in controlling Covid-19 symptoms in the home setting, without any requirement of hospitalization. Covid-19 (SARS-CoV-2), a viral disease by novel coronavirus, impacted 220 countries. Although, numerous attempts have been made for the management and treatment of Covid-19 with various drugs, traditional Ayurveda and Siddha has been widely reported to be effective in treating viral diseases through altering innate adaptive immune response and inhibition of virus attachment to body cells. It is found to inhibit attachment of virus to human cell, hence reducing viral load induced cytokine storm, inflammatory over reactions in the body of patients and inhibition of community spread. The experience of 2 cases reported here showed how senior citizens with various co-morbidities recovered from covid 19 and remained healthy without sequelae or side effects even after 6 months of follow-up. These observations are vital clues for a large population-based study and ongoing clinical trials. Mechanism of action of Sidha and Ayurvedic medicines like Kabasura Kudineer, Sitopladi, Triphala are well published and highly recommended for affecting viral entry and immune regulatory pathways. With no side effects, secondary infections and action, these regimens pave the ways for safe and effective cure for Covid-19.
