An Ontology-Based Multimedia Annotator for the Semantic Web of Language Engineering

Abstract: The development of the Semantic Web, the next-generation Web, greatly relies on the availability of ontologies and powerful annotation tools. However, there is a lack of ontology-based annotation tools for linguistic multimedia data. Existing tools either lack ontology support or provide limited support for multimedia. To fill the gap, we present an ontology-based linguistic multimedia annotation tool, OntoELAN, which features: (1) the support for OWL ontologies; (2) the management of language profiles, which … Show more

“…An annotator for multimedia files (audio/video) is proposed in [27] where annotations are organized in multiple and sequential tiers, and the final one encloses the annotations derived from an ontology called General Multimedia Ontology. Differently from previous one, it does not provide a automatic annotation system but it is up to the user to annotate manually the content of the files choosing the opportune entities from the ontology.…”

“…ELAN (EUDICO Linguistic Annotator) provides support for linguistic annotation (analysis of language, sign language, and gesture) of multimedia recordings, including support for time segmentation and multiple annotation layers, but not the support of ontology. OntoELAN [22] extends ELAN with an ontologybased annotation approach: OWL linguistic ontologies could be used in annotations, while the ontological tiers should be linked to general multimedia ontology classes. With this role, GOLD (General Ontology for Linguistic Description) ontology is adopted [23].…”
