An ontological approach for pathology assessment and diagnosis of tunnels

Abstract: Tunnel maintenance requires complex decision making, which involves pathology diagnosis and risk assessment, to ensure full safety while optimising maintenance and repair costs. A Decision Support System (DSS) can play a key role in this process by supporting the decision makers in identifying pathologies based on disorders present in various tunnel portions and contextual factors affecting a tunnel. Another key aspect is to identify which spatial stretches within a tunnel contain pathologies of similar kinds … Show more

“…With the development of big data today, the quality and quantity of data are directly related to the efficiency of risk management, but the databases of current studies do not quite meet the requirements of big data [16] [77] [89]and the sample size is small. Moreover, the validation of new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, is limited to a single project [90] [53] [66]. These are all matters worthy of continued research by scholars.…”

“…The ontology records the data structure and information needed for the maintenance management of the industrial assets with their objects, attributes, and relationships. Dimitrova et al (2020) developed PADTUN, a novel intelligent decision support system that assists with pathology diagnosis and assessment of tunnels with respect to their disorders and diagnosis influencing factors. Nevertheless, these ontologies are designed for specific industrial fields or for a specific type of industrial systems.…”

“…Semantic technologies are proven to support such information integration needs for building DSS 42,43 . Semantic technologies including Resource Description Framework/Web Ontology Language (RDF/OWL) 44,45 and Linked Data 46 provide a mechanism for formal data representation in DSS systems 47 . These data representations standards also make it easier to personalise and contextualise data, in order to create tailored filters, views and analysis mechanisms which are key to any DSS.…”
