Abstract-Forwarding decisions in classical IP-based networks are predetermined by routing. This is necessary to avoid loops, inhibiting opportunities to implement an adaptive and intelligent forwarding plane. Consequently, content distribution efficiency is reduced due to a lack of inherent multi-path transmission. In Named Data Networking (NDN) instead, routing shall hold a supporting role to forwarding, providing sufficient potential to enhance content dissemination at the forwarding plane. In this paper we design, implement, and evaluate a novel probabilitybased forwarding strategy, called Stochastic Adaptive Forwarding (SAF) for NDN. SAF imitates a self-adjusting water pipe system, intelligently guiding and distributing Interests through network crossings circumventing link failures and bottlenecks. Just as real pipe systems, SAF employs overpressure valves enabling congested nodes to lower pressure autonomously. Through an implicit feedback mechanism it is ensured that the fraction of the traffic forwarded via congested nodes decreases. By conducting simulations we show that our approach outperforms existing forwarding strategies in terms of the Interest satisfaction ratio in the majority of the evaluated scenarios. This is achieved by extensive utilization of NDN's multipath and content-lookup capabilities without relying on the routing plane. SAF explores the local environment by redirecting requests that are likely to be dropped anyway. This enables SAF to identify new paths to the content origin or to cached replicas, circumventing link failures and resource shortages without relying on routing updates.

Several forwarding strategies (FS) were already proposed to leverage packet delivery in information-centric networking (ICN). However, less attention has been given to FS potential to improve quality of service (QoS) in ICN. This work addresses the impact of FS on the performance of voice application, video streaming and file transfer protocol (FTP). Particularly, we investigate the performance gain when distinct FS are tailored to these traffic categories using named data networking (NDN), a prominent ICN architecture. This work also proposes a new forwarding strategy, called inverse pending interests (IPI), which can be used for low-priority traffic. Given that distinct FS are simultaneously applied, we also evaluate their interoperability using three scenarios and observing QoS metrics for the applications mentioned above with different priorities for each traffic. The work was conducted within a multiobjective optimization framework, which allows defining dominant sets of solutions and enriches the analysis when compared to aiming at a single optimal solution. The simulations were performed using the ndnSIM simulator and the results indicate, for example, that multicast and best-route are the most suitable FS for voice application, while the request forwarding algorithm could better serve video streaming. The proposed IPI algorithm is beneficial when low-priority (FTP) traffic is present, and its adoption does not significantly impair other FS.

A Multi-Pronged Approach to Adaptive and Context Aware Content Dissemination in VANETs

Content dissemination in Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) has the potential to enable a myr- iad of applications, ranging from advertising, traffic and emergency warnings to infotainment. This variety in applications and services calls for mechanisms able to optimize content storing, retrieval and forwarding among vehicles, without jeopardizing network resources. Content Centric Networking (CCN), takes advantage of inherent content redundancy in the network in order to decrease the utilization of network resources, improve response time and content availability, coping efficiently with some of the effects of mobility. Floating Content (FC), on the other hand, holds potential to implement efficiently a large amount of vehicular applications thanks to its property of geographic content replication, while Software Defined Networking (SDN), is an attractive solution for the lack of flexibility and dynamic programmability that characterizes current VANET architectures. By implementing a logical centralization of the network, SDN enables dynamic and efficient management of network resources.In this paper, for a few reference scenarios, we illustrate how approaches that combine CCN, FC and SDN enable an innovative adaptive VANET architecture able to efficiently accommodate to intermittent connectivity, fluctuating node density and mobility patterns on one side and application performance and network resources on the other side, aiming to achieve high QoS. For each scenario, we highlight the main open research challenges, and we describe possible solutions to improve content dissemination and reduce replication without affecting content availability.
