An oligogenic architecture underlying ecological and reproductive divergence in sympatric populations

Abstract: The evolutionary trajectories and genetic architectures underlying ecological divergence with gene flow are poorly understood. Sympatric timing types of the intertidal insect Clunio marinus (Diptera) from Roscoff (France) differ in lunar reproductive timing. One type reproduces at full moon, the other at new moon, controlled by a circalunar clock of yet unknown molecular nature. Lunar reproductive timing is a magic trait for a sympatric speciation process, as it is both ecologically relevant and entails assort… Show more

“…Thus, if the two zeitgebers set the phase differently, losing sensitivity to one of them can be an evolutionary strategy to set the phase according to the most informative zeitgeber. In line with that, we find the same QTL locus harboring STAT-1 and CG022363 as one of the QTLs responsible for the phase-difference between Ros-2FM and Ros-2NM (manuscript submitted, Briševac et al 2022).…”

“…However, several non-recombining regions were found in both families and one in which the marker order was inverted as compared to the reference (Figure2 B and D). These regions are thought to be large polymorphic inversions (Michailova 1980) which are limiting mapping resolution on the first chromosome and in the right arm of the second chromosome (manuscript submitted, Briševac et al 2022).…”

“…In whole-genome screens, core circadian clock genes have been identified as associated with the presence and absence of circasemilunar rhythms (Fuhrmann et al, 2023). The circadian clock gene period was identified as a candidate involved in determining the phase of a circalunar rhythm by a combination of QTL mapping and whole-genome screens (Briševac et al, 2023). The current study provides a mechanistic framework for those genomic findings, explaining how the circadian clock could be involved in circasemilunar time-keeping of C. marinus.…”
