An oil sloshing study: adaptive fixed-mesh ALE analysis and comparison with experiments

Abstract: This work reports an experimental and numerical analysis of the sloshing of a squared tank partially lled with a domestic vegetable oil. The tank is subjected to controlled motions with a shake table. The freesurface evolution is captured using two experimental techniques: ultrasonic sensors and an image capturing method. The data obtained using these two techniques are compared between them and used to conrm the measurements. Only conrmed data within the error range are reported. Filling depth, imposed amplit… Show more

“…The videos were recorded during the periodic time regime of the system. The error in measurements is bounded by ± 1 pix = ±0.2 mm, which is consistent with previous works (Cruchaga et al , 2013; Castillo et al , 2019; Núñez Aedo et al , 2020).…”

“…In addition, the measurements obtained with the sensors are confirmed with data provided by the camera using as post process a motioncapturing technique for the interface. Information on the sensors and the verification procedures applied to their measurements can be found in previously reported work (Castillo, 2019;Núñez Aedo et al, 2020;Núñez et al, 2022;Battaglia, 2022). Considering these facts, the sensors were positioned 25 mm away from the tank walls, as shown in Figure 2(d).…”

“…Different types of adaptive mesh schemes have been developed and investigated according to the free surface behaviour. The results are verified with experiments [11][12][13]. The mesh resolution plays a critical role in determining the accuracy of the simulation results, but finer meshes can significantly increase the computational cost.…”

“…e free surface will move under the gravity, and the profile of interface front changes with time evolution. In recent years, the numerical investigation of this problem has become a research hotspot and received a great deal of attention [1][2][3][4][5].…”
