An Isolated Power Factor Corrected Cuk Converter with Integrated Magnetics for Brushless DC Ceiling Fan Applications

Abstract: The usage of BLDC motors in the low-power range is increasing rapidly in home appliances such as ceiling fans. This has necessitated the development of reliable, compact and efficient AC-DC power supplies for motor drive circuitry. This paper presents a power supply design consisting of an AC-DC isolated PFC Cuk converter with integrated magnetics that supplies a single-shunt voltage source inverter for the sensorless drive of the BLDC fan motor. The proposed power supply design is comprised of an integrated m… Show more

“…2023. 7-19: 6-11 Introduction DC motors have wide popularity because they are very versatile in industrial (Kumar, Surya, Tabrez, Afida, & Molla Shahadat, 2022), domestic (Khan, et al, 2021), and laboratory (Said, et al, 2022) mechanical applications. In many industries, DC motors are used as elements that perform essential tasks within their processes.…”

“…One drawback is the presence of a transformer, which introduces undesired parasitic losses and limits the available duty cycle range, in both modes of operation (buck or boost). The ratio between the output voltage and input voltage is equal to the inverse of the transformer ratio times the ratio between the power switch in the ON state over the OFF state [29]. Hence, to have equal voltage gain for both buck and boost modes, the ideal transformer turns ratio must be equal to one.…”

“…Chiang et al (2016) introduced a control topology for PFC converters which can be widely implemented as AFC (Automatic Frequency Control) in many power supplies [20]. In general, the control of a PFC rectifier necessitates at least three sensors [21,22] and hence results in higher cost. Thus, to overcome this situation, the proposed topology utilises converter and maintains the stability of the system.…”
