An isoform of ferritin as a component of protein yolk platelets in Schistosoma mansoni

Abstract: Schistosoma mansoni possesses two isoforms of the iron storage protein ferritin, Fer1 and Fer2. At the mRNA level as well as at the protein level, Fer1 is much more abundant than Fer2; females contain an about 15-fold excess of Fer1 compared with males. In contrast, nearly equal amounts of Fer2 occur in both sexes. By electron microscopy we identified ferritin as a component of electron dense membrane-bound bodies in cells of the vitellarium. The mode of formation of these inclusions (as inferred from electron… Show more

“…The discrepancy to about 950 bases, as measured for Fer2 mRNA on Northern blots (SchulJler et al, 1995b), presumably is explained by the poly(A) tail. The different lengths between the Ferl and Fer2 transcripts of 192 bases is reflected by different band sizes on northern blots (SchiiBler et al, 1995b).…”

“…Wolbachia influences iron metabolism and ferritin is up-regulated when Wolbachia is absent, which may lead to apoptosis during oogenesis (86). Of interest also is that in Schistosoma mansoni one ferritin isoform is present at about 15-fold excess in females compared with males (87). The observation that ferritin like protein has higher expression for both occurrences in eggs from Male-biased females is thus of general interest given the endosymbiotic origin of mitochondria.…”

“…For genes expressed in the reproductive organs of paired females such as the eggshell precursor protein genes p14 (Koster et al 1988) and p19 (Michel et al 2003), the iron storage protein gene ferritin I (Schussler et al 1995), and a mucin-like protein gene (Menrath et al 1995) an influence of the male on transcription was documented. After separation from the male partner, the transcriptional activity of these genes declined, but was restored after re-pairing (Chen et al 1992;Grevelding et al 1997;Michel et al 2003).…”
