An IoT Surveillance System Based on a Decentralised Architecture

Abstract: In the last few years, we witnessed numerous episodes of terrorist attacks and menaces in public crowded places. The necessity of better surveillance in these places pushed the development of new automated solutions to spot and notify possible menaces as fast as possible. In this work, we propose a novel approach to create a decentralized architecture to manage patrolling drones and cameras exploiting lightweight protocols used in the internet of things (IoT) domain. Through the adoption of the mist computing … Show more

“…Second, the communication time is known to be larger than ∆t i and a "tangential" pass (like the one enforced by (3)) does not suffice. The method (detailed below) is to enter a loitering mode to increase arbitrarily the data-gathering time [42]. Making the reasonable assumption that the loitering r l i radius respects the condition r i < r l i < R i , means that the UAV can orbit the waypoint ω i for an indefinite period of time [43].…”

“…The system designed for an IoT surveillance application is presented by [84] and is based on visual ground sensor network with security cameras, patrolling drones and unmanned ground vehicles. The integration and the data and command flows are detailed using open IoT protocols such as MQTT and publish–subscribe data architectures.…”

“…However, this proposal cannot reduce the data transfer delay from the publishing device to the server because there is no improvement of the MQTT protocol. Santamaria proposed an anti-terrorism surveillance system [43] that can respond quickly to suspicious objects when they are found in three layers. Distributed surveillance systems are able to respond more quickly to cloud computing using edge computing technology.…”
