An Iodine‐Vapor‐Induced Cyclization in a Crystalline Molecular Flask

Abstract: A vapor‐induced cyclization has been observed in the host environment of a crystalline molecular flask (CMF), within which 1,8‐bis(2‐phenylethynyl)naphthalene (bpen), a diarenynyl system primed for cyclization, was exposed to iodine vapor to yield the corresponding indeno[2,1‐α]phenalene species. The cyclization process, unique in its vapor‐induced, solvent‐free nature, was followed spectroscopically, and found to occur concurrently with the displacement of lattice solvent for molecular iodine in CMF⋅0.75 bpen… Show more

“…Iodine vapour has additionally been harnessed in CMFs to catalyse the cyclisation reaction of a hosted dialkylnaphthalene guest. 41 The reaction was shown to reach completion by 1 H-NMR analyses performed on digested single-crystals after 7 days, with intermediate sampling done at 3 and 0.5 days. X-ray diffraction methods were used to identify the likely location of the cyclised product, as well as iodine molecules in the crystalline lattice.…”

“…[94] In addition, acylation reactions of amino groups, [95] aminealdehyde condensation reactions [96] and Pd-mediated aromatic bromination reactions [97] and metal-catalyzed methylation reactions [98] were also occurred in the single crystalline phases. In 2016, Burrows and Gee and co-workers [99] reported a solidgas phase catalysis by using this kind of crystal. The cyclization of 1,8-bis(2-phenylethynyl)naphthalene under the mediation of iodine vapor was carried out in the crystal-vapor approach without solvents.…”

“…7 Increasingly, researchers are looking to include a wider range of molecules as potential guests within porous frameworks, including organic dyes, 8 drug molecules, 9 reaction intermediates 10 and products. 11 Host-guest complexes can also give rise to properties that are native to neither the MOF nor the guest. 5,12 Allendorf and co-workers reported the inclusion of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) into [Cu 3 (btc) 2 ] (HKUST-1).…”
