An Investigation on the Closure of the Water Budget Methods Over Volta Basin Using Multi-Satellite Data

Abstract: The terrestrial water budget over a particular hydrological domain (e.g., a drainage basin) plays an important role in understanding the interactions among the energy and water cycles. In this work, we assess the closure of the water budget methods [i.e., terrestrial water budget (TWB) and the coupled atmospheric-terrestrial water budget (ATWB)] as well as the control of total water storage gain over Volta Basin of West Africa. To achieve this, we explore the available satellite and data products: GRACE-derive… Show more

“…The two series have a correlation coefficient of 0.71 (p-value 8.71ˆ10´2 6 ) indicating that TWSC follows the rainfall pattern within SFRB. Moreover, rainfall generally bounds TWSC as expected (see, e.g., references [55,63]). 13.55 mm/mo, respectively.…”

“…At a basin scale, irrespective of the size and relative signal amplitude, the solutions all vary from the ensemble mean (composed from CSR, JPL, GFZ, and GRGS) on the order of 10 to 15 mm. 18 Efforts have also been made to assess the GRACE-derived TWSA fields; for example, combining measurements and/or models in the context of the water-budget equations [19][20][21][22][23] or in terms of groundwater estimations. 8,[24][25][26] Additionally, direct comparisons with hydrology models, 27,28 remotely sensed rainfall data, 29,30 and ocean-bottom pressure products 31 have been reported.…”

“…While the area of Lake Volta is widely described as ~8500 km 2 (e.g., [19,37]), the lake in fact shrinks during the dry season and swells during the rainy season [38]. Vanderpuye [39] found a linear relationship between the water level and surface area for Lake Volta.…”

“…Ndehedehe et al [16] examined space-time characteristics of droughts over the VRB using GRACE data and multiple drought indices. In addition, studies of VRB water balance have been undertaken using a variety of models and data (e.g., [17][18][19]). These studies mainly focus on TWS changes in the VRB, but potential of GRACE gravity measurements to monitor and quantify long-term water storage changes in Lake Volta has not been specifically discussed.…”
