An Investigation on the Application of a Competency Assessment System in a Blended Learning Course “Organic Chemistry Laboratory”

Jie Ying,
Jiahao Qiu,
Yougen Wu
et al.

Abstract: In this study, a new competency assessment system was developed for the blended learning course "Organic Chemistry Laboratory". The system utilized a mastery transcript evaluation model and incorporated the Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes (SOLO) taxonomy and Primary Trait Analysis (PTA) scale method. With this system, students can clearly understand the proficiency level that they need to reach both online and in class to achieve their desired course grades. The impact of the assessment method was anal… Show more

“…The learning outcomes evaluation questionnaire was designed with a Likert five-point scale (strongly agree, agree, neutral, disagree, strongly disagree, with corresponding scores of 5, 4, 3, 2, 1) and consisted of 24 items to evaluate the effectiveness of integrating research achievements into experimental teaching (Table S6 in the Instructor Note). 29,30 The assessment results indicated that through this comprehensive experimental project, students have understood and mastered the principles and methods of molecular imprinting technology (Figure 7). They have also gained further insight into cutting-edge research areas and developed an interest in research.…”

“…Each assessment can be taken multiple times to demonstrate understanding. This mastery learning approach has a similar aspect to competency-based , and specifications grading in that students are allowed to take assessments multiple times; however, in a PSI, students are moving through the course material at their own pace. Students can take the time they need to understand a topic before moving on to the next concept.…”

“…By combining the best aspects of traditional classroom learning with the convenience of online education, such a blended course can provide a flexible and effective way for learners to acquire new knowledge and skills of computer-based learning. While the benefits of such blended teaching have been extensively reported during the COVID-19 pandemic, ,, its applicability in the context of computer-based learning remains to be fully explored.…”
