An investigation on shape memory behaviors of epoxy resin system

Abstract: Shape-memory epoxy is receiving considerable attention because of its superior mechanical and thermal properties and excellent shape-memory performance. In this study, a novel series of shape-memory epoxy resins are prepared using hydro-epoxy, hexahydrophthalic anhydride, and diglycidyl 4,5-epoxy tetrahydro phthalate (TDE-85) to further improve the recovery force of shape-memory epoxy resins. The thermal, mechanical, and shape-memory properties of the shape-memory epoxy resin system are investigated by differe… Show more

“…The T g of SMEP decreases from 110°C to 50°C, and the crosslink density decreases. Subsequently, they prepared a series of new SMEPs using hydrogen epoxy, MMHPA, and diglycidyl 4,5-epoxy tetrahydro phthalate (TDE-85) [ 68 ]. They then prepared a series of SMEPs with tetraposensitive epoxy monomer (AG-80) and glutaric anhydride [ 69 ].…”

“…Once heated above its glass transition temperature (Tg), SMP skin transfer to soft and rubbery state, which can morph to a new shape. [10][11][12] Adjusted by the temperature rise and fall, SMP skin can change it state from glassy to rubbery reversible, making morphing skins have variable stiffness, wide deformation range, and strong adaptability. It has been reported that SMP skin could be strain to 200% elongation.…”

“…This memory characteristic enables polymers to form a permanent shape and then transformed to another temporary shape under external force. Some certain stimuli (e.g., electric, heat, magnetic field, and heat) will lead to a shape transformation from temporary to permanent, just like “switch” 1,4,5 . Various types of stimuli sensitive SMPs have been developed to meet work requirements and present great application potential in many fields, such as aerospace, medicine, and electronics 6–9 …”
