An investigation on mechanical and physical properties of recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) with and without silica fume

The construction industry consumes enormous quantities of concrete, which subsequently produces large amount of material waste during production and demolishing. As a result, the colossal quantity of concrete rubble is disposed in landfills. This paper, therefore, evaluated the feasibility of reusing waste concrete as recycled aggregate (RA) to produce concrete. The replacement levels were 20, 50, and 80% RA of normal coarse aggregate. Micro silica (MS) and fly ash (FA) were used as cementitious replacement material, however, the water-to-binder ratio (w/b) was kept constant at 0.31. A total of 44 specimens were used to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties. Concrete with 80% RA showed good workability and mechanical properties. The compressive strength of the concrete with 80% RA was 60 MPa at 28 days and 77 MPa at 56 days. Rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT) was also conducted, where the concrete with 80% RA had the lowest permeability.

Abstract. Recycled concrete is an environmental green material for recycling construction and demolished wastes. Numerous studies performed on recycled concrete indicated that it had poor characteristics of workability, strength and durability attribute to the inferior mechanical properties of recycled aggregates. A wide range of investigations had been carried out to improve the mechanical properties of recycled concrete. For better manifesting green concepts, waste glass-fiber composite tablets, recycled PET fibers and organic sisal fibers were used in this study to enhance the mechanical properties of recycled concrete. The experimental results show that the smooth surface of composite tablets may be weak points to degrade its compressive strength. PET fibers and sisal fibers can improve the ductility of recycled concrete obviously.

Aggregate Recycling in Construction: Analysis of the Gaps between the Chilean and Spanish Realities

This study conducts a comparative analysis between Chilean and Spanish reality in regard to the recycling of aggregates and their reuse in road works and urban roads. The current situation of both countries was reviewed through different sources of information such as technical and legal regulation, projects and executed works, to then validate them in Chile by way of interviews to various professionals in the field of urban and interurban road construction, as well as others belonging to government bodies. Spain has extensive experience on this issue, as it has a culture of recycling and reusing aggregates that has produced excellent results, a situation which was taken into account to compare it to Chile's reality. The conclusion is that currently, in Chile, although the existence of recycled aggregate use is known, this is not the case on a technical level for professionals in the sector. It lacks a specific government body that is in charge of this issue and does not have appropriate infrastructure for its treatment. The materials with a promising future within the construction sector are the production of crushed granular bases and the creation of low-resistance concretes, which cannot be used, as laws that regulate them are still being drafted.
