An investigation of thermal changes of various permanent dental cements

Abstract: Theaimofthisstudywastoinvestigateandcomparethetemperatureriseswhichoccurredduringthesettingreactionsof different permanent cements used to lute fixed partial prosthodontics. In this study, four cements were used. They were mixed in three different proportions: according to manufacturers' recommendations, at doubled powder ratio, and at doubled liquid ratio. With a thermocouple, the temperature rises which occurred during the setting reactions were measured. For each proportion, the measurement was repeated five… Show more

“…GICs also benefit from their thermal compatibility with tooth tissue 2. Among most restorative and luting cements, GICs have the lowest increase in temperature while setting, which improves their biocompatibility, especially in cements that have to be placed in close contact to the pulp (4). Despite these benefits, their applications are limited due to their low mechanical properties, such as compressive strength, flexural strength, (diametral) tensile strength and brittleness.…”

“…Various factors that cause SD of cements include composition of the cements, less powder-liquid ratio, the release of fluoride ions from certain cements, oral hygiene maintenance by the patient, composition of the dentifrice, pH of the foods/beverages taken by the patient, composition and pH of the saliva [9]. Numerous studies reported that the acidic pH increases SD to a greater extent [10][11][12]. Therefore, it is evident that the SD is more among the patients consuming more acidic beverages.…”
