Multiple-compaction demonstrates cyclic loading on laterite soils used in highway construction and its effects on engineering properties. The method determines the mechanical stability of derived soils from porphyritic granite, granite gneiss, and charnockite. Fifty-one soil samples were obtained from the horizons of the laterite soil profiles. Four sets of dynamic compactions were carried out on each sample. Index engineering properties such as specific gravity, Atterberg limits, and particle size distribution were investigated before and after multiple-compaction. The changes in engineering properties and moisture-density characteristics were investigated using the granulometric modulus and hardness index. Through multiple-compaction, larger grains in soils derived from granite gneiss and porphyritic granite disintegrated into smaller particles. The fine grains break down more easily than the large grains of quartz bound by clayey materials in charnockite-derived soils. Interestingly, the maximum dry density and optimum moisture content remain consistent in porphyritic and granite gneiss-derived soils after multiple compactions. Based on the densification and behaviour of the derived soils under multiple compaction in highway construction, porphyritic granite and granite gneiss-derived soils are more suitable as engineering materials than charnockite-derived soils.

Over the years, Casagrande plasticity chart is mainly used to classify fine grain soils. However, the use of the plasticity chart has been questioned recently and this has led to the development of a new plasticity chart. Polidori in 2007 and 2009, respectively, developed the new plasticity and activity charts using the Atterberg's limits of pure clays (montmorillonite and kaolinite clay minerals) and their mixture with fine silica sand in different proportions. The applicability of Polidori's charts was evaluated using some residual lateritic soils from Nigeria. On the Casagrande's plasticity chart, the lateritic soils mostly plot above the A-line in the zone designated as clay and classified as either CL or CH. However, on the Polidori's plasticity chart, the lateritic soils classified as CL or CH, whereas on Casagrande's plasticity chart they are classified as ML or MH and vice versa. The classifications obtained from Polidori's plasticity chart are predominantly in agreement with the main soil fractions or component of the soils. This is different from the classification obtained from Casagrande's plasticity chart where lateritic soils with lower clay fractions than their silt/sand fractions are classified as clayey soils. Polidori's activity chart shows that lateritic soils that lie in the same plastic zone may show different behavior due to the different properties of the clay minerals in the soils. In cases where the lateritic soils lie in the zone that is not corresponding to their clay contents on the Polidori's plasticity chart, we presume that other factors apart from those stated by Polidori might also be responsible. Although the use of Polidori's plasticity chart gives a fair classification of the lateritic soils, nevertheless the peculiarity of residual soils such as the in situ structure that influenced the properties of the soils and properties developed due to weathering effects must be taken into consideration as well.

Failure of highway pavement and collapse of building in basement complex of Nigeria is often related to the instability of the residual. This study evaluated the strength characteristics of gneiss-derived residual Soils as materials usable for road pavement structures. A total of eleven soil samples derived from granite gneiss were subjected to laboratory geotechnical analyses based on standard practices. The geotechnical analyses reveal the soils’ natural moisture content, specific gravity, grain sizes, consistency limits, shearing strengths, maximum dry density, and optimum moisture content. Based on AASHTO classification, the soil samples are classified as A-7-6, A-6, and A-7-5. The results of the laboratory analyses revealed that the natural moisture content and specific gravity ranged from 8.30 to 22.70% and 2.6 to 2.8 respectively. Particle size analysis reveals that the coarse contents of the soils ranged from 28.8% to 59.8% and amount of fines ranged from 40.2 to 71.2%. The liquid limit ranged from 31.3% to 68.3%, plastic limit ranged from 20% to 28.0%, plasticity index ranged from 4.8% to 38.90% and linear shrinkage ranged from 5.7 to 13.6%. The maximum dry density ranged from 1481 kg/m3 to 1921 kg/m3 and optimum moisture content ranged from 15.2% to 27.6%. Undrained triaxial shear strength (Cu) ranged from 43.0 Kpa to 250.3Kpa, angle of friction ranges from 11.7 to 29.30, and unconfined compressive strength ranged from 153 to 356.5Kpa. The results indicate that the residual soils are poor sub-grade and foundation materials due to their high amount of fines, linear shrinkage values, plasticity, and swelling potential, as well as low maximum dry density.
