“…Our analysis suggests that the processes and factors involved in maintaining CAM use are slightly different from those involved in CAM use in general: maintaining CAM use appears to be more dependent on positive experiences of CAM (pull factors) than on negative experiences of conventional medicine (push factors). This is consistent with some previous research 43,47 (but not all 51 ). Our interviewees described stopping CAM use, if either (1) it had successfully resolved an acute problem, or (2) it had failed to meet their expectations and=or provide desired health benefits, and=or they felt it was too expensive.…”

“…These differences are important to people as they provide an alternative choice if people are dissatisfied with conventional treatment. This finding is consistent with previous research identifying dissatisfaction with the treatment outcome to be important for users of herbal medicines in other clinical groups (Shumay et al, 2002 ; Sirois & Gick, 2002 ). In the current study, participants spoke about their dislike of side effects and potential harm from pharmaceutical treatments, which in one participant with more severe anxiety caused her anxiety to increase.…”

“…However, weak influences were generally proffered by the negative and unpleasant aspects of orthodox health services regarding TRM utilization by the adult population, and therefore tend to be supportive in outlook. This was consistent with other studies elsewhere which have reported independently that aspects of modern medicine that push people into TRM use are only an ancillary to the various pull mechanisms (Astin, 1998 ; McLaughlin et al, 2012 ; Siahpush, 1999 ; Sirois & Gick, 2002 ).…”
