An Investigation of Sustainable Transportation Model in Campus Areas with Space Syntax Method

Abstract: Purpose Campus areas should be designed as centers where social activities can be fulfilled to meet students' needs, and which can serve the society by promoting sustainability. Nowadays, transportation systems (bike path, public transport, etc.) that support sustainability are not very common in campus areas. This situation leads to many environmental, economic and social problems. Therefore, it is extremely important to develop sustainable transport plans to uncover the current state of the transport system … Show more

“…Data such as the settlement pattern, the relations between buildings and streets, and the integration of open and closed spaces reflect the social structure of the area (Hillier, 1996). One of the most important properties of the method is that it can visually show how newly designed spatial models work, compare the old and the new, and to some extent, predict future problems in small or large scale designing and planning studies (Kubat, 2015;Günaydın & Yücekaya, 2020a). On the other hand, criticisms of the space syntax methodology are summarized as follows (Kubat, 2015):…”

“…In the space syntax method, integration and connectivity values are evaluated. The intelligibility of a space expresses the relationship between its connection and integration values (Günaydın & Yücekaya, 2020a). The intelligibility of a space is related with the amount of connection and integration of the system, and the formal perception of the space can be explained by the correlation between these parameters (Tanrıverdi Kaya, 2020).…”

“…The quantitative spatial analysis method in spatial syntax has been used for a wide range of applications in the field of urban traffic [24,25]. Dario Esposito et al [26] studied the relationship between the spatial structure of an urban environment and the movement patterns of pedestrians using spatial syntax and how the field of perception of agents impacts pedestrians' route choice.…”
