An Investigation of Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Polypropylene Clay Nanocomposites Containing Different Nanoclays

Abstract: In the present investigation, polypropylene clay nanocomposites (PP-CNs) are prepared by melt compounding using the Polymer NanoComposite Injection Molding Compounder (PNC-IMC) with different nanoclays and at varying compatibilizer/nanoclay ratios. A specially devised hyperbolical nozzle is used to induce elongational flow for better mechanical properties. Statistical analysis of the mechanical properties reveal that PP-CNs based on mica-phlogopite is superior to other PP-CNs. Beside intercalated and exfoliate… Show more

“…The PP and the compatibilizer (PP‐g‐MA) were fed through the main hooper of the IMC and the clay nanomaterials were rather fed downstream, through an extruder barrel. Four different PP/clay nanocomposites (PP/MMT, PP/OMMT, PP/OMHT, and PP/MICA, with PP‐g‐MA in each nanocomposite) were made in this fashion, without changing the process parameters . The composition of the PP nanocomposites was presented in Table .…”

“…This lower limiting oxygen index of the PP makes it easily flammable when compared to the polymers used in industries. Over the years, it has been evidently proved that the addition of clay nanoparticles is an effective technique to reduce the flammability of polymers .…”

“…Recently, a specially designed hyperbolical nozzle was used to induce elongational flow for better mechanical properties in injection molded PP/clay nanocomposites [42]. A novel one-pot preparation method of extrusion, combined with water injection, was proposed for high clay dispersion into a PP-g-MAH matrix [43].…”
