An Investigation of Individual and Contextual Factors Influencing Training Variables

Abstract: This study represents an investigation of modeling training motivation and learning from both individual and contextual perspectives. Participants were 250 undergraduate business students who entered a remedial training class as a result of their failure to pass the previous course. The individual factor, self-efficacy, was found to correlate with learning partly through the mediation of training motivation. The contextual factor, interactional justice experienced in the class they previously failed, moderated… Show more

“…This finding was consistent with those of previous studies (Alliger & Janak, 1989;Chuang et al, 2005;Clement, 1982;Liao & Tai, 2006). Thus, it suggested that, for example, when organizations require employees to participate in training programs more effectively, they should enhance learning motivation among trainees to increase their learning.…”

“…In a review of training effectiveness studies, self-efficacy is one of the main determinants of proximal training outcomes (Haccoun & Saks, 1998) and it has been shown to positively correlate with learning and behavior (e.g., Axtell, Maitlis & Yearta, 1997;Cheng, 2000;Chuang, Liao & Tai, 2005;Gist et al, 1991;Guerrero & Sire, 2001;Martocchio & Webster, 1992;Quinones, 1995). Additionally, several meta-analyses confirmed the relationship between self-efficacy and outcomes pertaining to performance (Stajkovic & Luthans, 1998).…”

“…That these factors were so influential is not surprising, given that behavior is considered to be a product of both the person and the environment (Chuang, Liao, & Tai, 2005;Vermunt, 2005). Social workers have long taken a holistic view of development, acknowledging the dynamic and reciprocal relationships between personal and contextual factors.…”

“…The literature reveals that individuals are often affected by their own abilities as well as the environments in which they live (Chuang, Liao, & Tai, 2005;Vermunt, 2005). The remainder of the article will connect the personal and contextual factors to existing literature and then discuss implications for social workers and helping professionals who work with GLQ individuals with a Christian upbringing.…”
