An Investigation of Finger and Manual Dexterity

Abstract: In ergonomics, handgrip has been perceived as one of the most important hand functions; however, other types of functions of the hand are also important to the ergonomist, such as finger and manual dexterity, on which few ergonomic studies have been done. This experiment involved 60 male and female college students whose performance (number of pegs placed into a board in 30 sec.) of finger dexterity were statistically significantly different between the right and left hands and between women and men. The inter… Show more

“…Attention and processing speed were determined by the Test battery of Attentional Performance (TAP; Zimmermann & Fimm, 2004), the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT 3″; Gronwall & Sampson, 1974), and the Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT; Smith, 1982) et al, 2000). Neurological assessments included the Expanded disability status scale (EDSS) (Kurtzke, 1983), the 9-Hole Peg Test (NHPT) (Backman et al, 1992;Chan, 2000), and the Timed-25 food walk (T25FW). We inverted cognitive test scores occasionally, so that higher values indicate always better performance.…”

“…For descriptive purposes, we report SDMT values as SD from available norm data adjusted for sex, age and education (Köhler et al, 2017). 9-Hole Peg Test (NHPT) (Backman et al, 1992;Chan, 2000) and the Timed-25 food walk (T25FW) were used in the neurological assessment.…”

“…It is an assessment involving insertion of a pin with a length of 25 mm, 3 mm in diameter within a predetermined length of time into a board on which 25 holes are arranged vertically. 25 The DASH is a 30-item patient-rated questionnaire of upper extremity disability and symptoms. Each question has five response choices, ranging from ''no difficulty or no symptom'' to ''unable to perform activity or very severe symptom.''…”

“…Activities include fine hand use, for example, ''performing the coordinated actions of handling objects, picking up, manipulating and releasing them using one's hand, fingers.'' 2 Dexterity in particular, which is defined as ''the skillful and controlled manipulation of a tool or an object by the fingers,'' 3,4 is considered essential for successfully performing tasks of daily living, work, school, play, and leisure. 5,6 As such, in a comprehensive assessment of upper extremity function, dexterity is an important component.…”
