An investigation of bistatic calibration objects

Abstract: Abstract-Several popular metallic bistatic calibration objects are investigated, including a sphere, long and short cylinders, dihedral, trihedral, circular disk and wire mesh. Comparisons are made between the advantages and disadvantages of various objects for calibration. The analysis addresses sensitivity to object alignment error, availability of accurate radar cross section (RCS) calculations and bistatic RCS levels. Both theoretical concepts and practical considerations are discussed based on measurement… Show more

“…The techniques are evaluated on the basis of several factors, namely: sensitivity of calibration to reference object alignment error, sensitivity to antenna polarization impurity, and ease and efficiency of implementation. The analysis of bistatic radar calibration objects is critical to the measurement process and is provided in our companion paper [1] as a distinct contribution.…”

“…Indeed, this is due to double and triple reflection contributions which provide a return of the incident wave in several directions. This justifies the employment of the TCR as radar enhancement device for navigational purposes, as appropriate reference target for RCS measurements [1,2] and, also, for the calibration of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images [3].…”

“…Thus, it is possible to analyze the relative contribution of each scattering mechanism to the scattered field as in [3].…”

“…Several canonical shapes, including metal disks and rectangular plates, have scattered fields known with a high degree of accuracy in the specular direction [3]. We have chosen a dielectric cube of dimensions equal to 40 × 40 × 40 mm 3 and relative permittivity 2.35 which is positioned at the center of the plate.…”
