This article presents an optimum yaw moment distribution scheme for a vehicle with electronic stability control (ESC) and active rear steering (ARS). After computing the control yaw moment in the yaw moment controller, it should be distributed into tire forces, generated by ESC and ARS. In this paper, yaw moment distribution is formulated as an optimization problem. New objective function is proposed to tune the relative magnitudes of the tire forces. Weighed pseudo-inverse control allocation (WPCA) is adopted to solve the problem. To check the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, simulation is performed on a vehicle simulation package, CarSim. From the simulation, the proposed optimum yaw moment distribution scheme is shown to effective for vehicle stability control.

This paper presents a novel multi-objective coordinated adaptive cruise control (ACC) algorithm based on a model predictive control (MPC) framework which can comprehensively address issues regarding longitudinal car-following performance, lateral stability, as well as vehicle safety. During the car-following, vehicle dynamics, illustrating the forces acting on the tire contact patches, are established. To simplify the tightly coupled dynamics system, a state-feedback based disturbance decoupling method is employed, by which longitudinal and lateral dynamics can be completely decoupled. Furthermore, the traditional MPC control with a constant weight matrix will probably not be able to solve time-varying multi-objective coordinated optimization issues, especially in transient scenarios. A weight coefficient self-tuning strategy is therefore suggested by which the weight coefficient for each sub-objective can be adjusted automatically with the change of traffic scenarios, accordingly improving the overall car-following performance. The simulations show that the control algorithm utilizing the suggested self-tuning strategy reaps significant benefits in terms of longitudinal car-following performance, while at the same time maintaining a small lateral stability error range.

Along with the advent of four-wheel-drive electric vehicles, plenty of control strategies have been proposed for such vehicles to coordinate the torque distribution between the four driving wheels. However, how the torque distribution fundamentally affects stability and handling and how the stability/handling characteristics shed light on control system design still require more in-depth investigation. In this article, the stability and handling performances of such electric vehicles are investigated by means of CarSim-Simulink co-simulation. Based on the stability/handling characteristics, a controller is designed to actively adjust the front-rear torque distribution, and another controller is devised to actively tune the left-right torque distribution. The effectiveness of the proposed controllers is verified through CarSimSimulink co-simulation. The simulation results indicate that the former controller improves stability especially on slippery road surfaces, and the latter controller not only enhances handling in common driving scenarios but also guarantees stability in critical driving conditions.
