An investigation into the relationship between thickness variations and manufacturing techniques of mouthguards

Abstract: This study highlights variability in the finished thickness of the mouthguards especially in the anterior sulcus region measurement point, both within and between individuals. At the anterior region measurement point of the mouthguard, the mean thickness was 1.62 mm, equating to an overall material thinning of 59.5% when using a single 4-mm EVA blank. This degree of thinning is comparative to previous single operator research studies.

“…[13][14][15][16][17] Forming machines have either a single-sided or double sided heating mechanism. Factors that affect shape change during this stage include the heater shape, molding machine heat source 15,22 and the sheet thickness, [23][24][25][26] color, 16,27 and material. 15,[17][18][19] The temperature was constantly higher on the heated surface than on the non-heated surface.…”

“…Estudos demonstram que a espessura ideal para confecção dos protetores bucais em uma escala de 1 a 6 mm, é de 4 mm (Farrington et al, 2016). Visto que testes em elementos finitos foram feitos e os protetores com espessuras menores que 3 mm apresentam deslocamento após força aplicada, além de apresentarem menor absorção de impacto.…”

“…In order to balance the wall thickness distribution in the bottom and sidewalls of the ther-moformed part, plug assist thermoforming may be a quick solution. Parameters such as plug geometry, plug temperature and plug material are very critical during the forming by changing wall thickness and friction between the sheet and mold [1,9]. During the forming process, firstly the plug touches the heated sheet surface.…”
