An Investigation Into the Gustafsson Limit for Small Planar Antennas Using Optimization

Abstract: The fundamental limit for small antennas provides a guide to the effectiveness of designs. Gustafsson et al, Yaghjian et al, and Mohammadpour-Aghdam et al independently deduced a variation of the Chu-Harrington limit for planar antennas in different forms. Using a multi-parameter optimisation technique based on the ant colony algorithm, planar, meander dipole antenna designs were selected on the basis of lowest resonant frequency and maximum radiation efficiency. The optimal antenna designs across the spectrum… Show more

“…Generalized absorption efficiencyη a was introduced in [23], [24] as the ratio of the total absorbed power to the total extinct power when illuminated by a wideband wave. This parameter was studied for the meander and Yagi antennas in [11], [25]. Calculation ofη a requires the numerical modeling of the receiving antenna across a broad frequency range.…”

“…Several antennas are compared with the bound in Fig. 15, see also [6,9,35,43,95]. The comparisons show that many antennas perform close to the bounds.…”

“…As a means of establishing a relationship for a broad range of antennas, the antennas investigated in Shahpari et al [18] were taken where possible (Figure 1 in [18], antennas a-f, h and i. Antennas g, j and k were excluded due to a feed point that is currently not possible in the new parametrisation). These antennas represent a variety of structures with minimum resonance frequencies ranging from 576 to 1757MHz.…”
