An investigation into the effects of ink formulations of semi-solid extrusion 3D printing on the performance of printed solid dosage forms

Bin Zhang,
Peter Belton,
Xin Yi Teoh
et al.

Abstract: The additional of a functional excipient, SiO2, and APIs showed significant impacts on the shape fidelity of SSE 3D printed tablets. The interactions between different APIs and the polymeric excipients used in the ink showed significantly impacts on the drug release profiles of the 3D printed tablets.

“…Furthermore, solvent residues and solvent evaporation may damage the structural integrity due to cracking and shrinkage of preparations [ 15 ]. Moreover, solvent evaporation maintains the volume of the formulation, which can easily create a loose microchannel structure unfavorable for the controlled release of water-soluble drugs [ 16 ]. Despite the challenges associated with DIW, its mild molding conditions have brought new processes to the pharmaceutical industry, necessitating solutions to accelerate the development and industrialization of DIW drug manufacturing technology.…”
