An investigation into series power tapping options of HVDC transmission lines

Abstract: The first commercial success in HVDe transmission was made in 1954 and it has since become popular as attempts have also been made to tap energy from the HVDe line itself. This paper discusses technical issues that are related to series energy tapping options for HVDe lines, with possible solutions. The performance and behavior of four different design options for a 2 MW series tap are investigated through simulations. Results are presented with comparisons, highlighting the key characteristics of each design,… Show more

“…The challenge is to develop an intermediate power converter for integrating the low-voltage VSC with high-voltage LCC-based HVDC system on which the present work is focussed. Many research works have been conducted in this direction [3][4][5][6][7][8][9], and the power converters proposed in these works can be broadly classified into two types: series configurations and parallel configurations [5].…”

“…In a series configuration to evacuate power, the DC link of the voltage source converter (VSC) which is used to evacuate the power is connected in series with the HVDC transmission line [6][7][8]. The primary challenge of series configuration is the requirement of converters with a high current rating as the entire current of the main HVDC system passes through the tapping scheme [7].…”

“…Most of the proposed HVDC taps are series taps due to some drawbacks associated with parallel taps including [10] One parallel HVDC tap scheme, the unidirectional DC transformer, is presented in [11]. The DC transformer is a topology that can achieve high step-up ratio within MW level power transfers.…”

“…For this reason an inexpensive and efficient HVDC-MVAC conversion method is required-this type of connection is referred to here as a HVDC Tap. The main requirements of HVDC tap are [2,10]…”
