Five dating strategies were used for determining the standardless fission-track age of the Durango apatite. These use the same fossil-track densities but differ in the manner in which the induced-track densities are determined. A conventional age calculation, without correction for experimental factors, gives inconsistent ages with methodrelated differences N 15%. Correcting for these factors brings the ages in line with each other and with the reference age but leaves no room for a partial-annealing correction based on the confined-track lengths. Three further reasons suggest that a length correction is not appropriate. (1) The evidence for lengthbased corrections is inconclusive. (2) The plateau age of the Durango apatite is consistent with its apparent fission-track age to within 1%. (3) The calculated effective etchable length of the fossil tracks agrees within error with that of the induced tracks; both are further consistent with the measured mean length of confined induced tracks. The circumstance that the (U,Th)/He ages of the accepted and proposed apatite age standards are consistent with their reference ages leaves no margin for a lowered fission-track age resulting from partial annealing, although the case of the Durango apatite itself is inconclusive because of its exceptional crystal size. It is conjectured that the shortening of the fossil tacks in the Durango apatite is due to a lowering of the track etch rate over time. In this case, annealing equations fitted to induced-track data underestimate the extent of confined-track-length reduction in geological samples.

[1] The southern Canadian foreland fold-and-thrust belt (FFTB) (SW Alberta -SE British Columbia) records the interplay between foreland basin evolution with the deforming wedge and thus controls the regionalscale overburden and exhumation history. Overburden estimates are typically based on the assumption that peak burials were reached by sedimentary burial prior to the emplacement of thrust sheets. This study combines organic maturity ranks from a newly compiled catalog with forward thermokinematic modeling to examine this assumption. The organic maturity rank trends correlate not only to sedimentary but also to tectonic burial histories. The forward thermokinematic modeling builds on this combined burial history scenario and shows how required peak burial and temperatures can be achieved with reduced sedimentary overburden when combined with tectonic loading. We thus consider that the overburden was reached during instead of prior to the contraction of the FFTB as result of an integrated sedimentary and tectonic burial history. Thermokinematic modeling also suggests that firstorder steady state temperature conditions prevail during the development of the FFTB. Differently from earlier findings that considered a drop in paleotemperature gradient during the belts growth, steady state conditions reduce the amount of regional overburden required and, consequently, of eroded sediments. The Sichuan Basin is a superimposition basin composed of terrestrial and marine sediments that is well known for its abundant petroleum resources. Thermal history reconstruction using paleogeothermal indicators, including vitrinite reflectance and thermochronological data, shows that different structural subsections of the Sichuan Basin have experienced various paleogeothermal episodes since the Paleozoic. The lower structural subsection comprising the Lower Paleozoic to Middle Permian (Pz-P 2 ) successions experienced a high paleogeothermal gradient (23.0-42.6°C/km) at the end of the Middle Permian (P 2 ), whereas the upper structural subsection comprising Late Permian to Mesozoic strata underwent a relatively lower paleogeothermal gradient (13.2-26.9°C/km) at the beginning of the denudation (Late Cretaceous or Paleocene in the different regions). During the denudation period, the Sichuan Basin experienced a successive cooling episode. The high paleogeothermal gradient resulted from an intensive thermal event correlated to the Emeishan mantle plume. The heat flow value reached 124.0 mW/m 2 in the southwestern basin near the center of the Emeishan large igneous province. The low geothermal gradient episode with heat flow ranging from 31.2 to 70.0 mW/m 2 may be related to the foreland basin evolution.
