An inventory of the names of native, non-endemic vascular plants described from Italy, their loci classici and types

Abstract: The census of the loci classici of 1,227 native, non-endemic vascular plants described from Italy is here presented and described. The effective place of publication of accepted names, basionyms and homotypic synonyms were identified and critically verified. The geographic information on the loci classici was excerpted from the protologues, as well as information on typification for the taxa described before 1 January 1958. The names without a holotype are 1,165. For 591 names a lecto- or neo-typification is a… Show more

“…The MNP is extremely rich in plant species, indeed its flora stands out for the high number of specific and subspecific taxa, for a total of 2,286 (Conti et al 2019 (Conti et al 2019). Moreover, the MNP is the locus classicus for 49 species and subspecies (Peruzzi et al 2015(Peruzzi et al , 2019. The Park administration established and maintains two botanical gardens, a seed bank, and a herbarium for preserving and studying the flora of the Park (Di Martino et al 2016a).…”

“…Effective typifications exist for 14 of these names (Jarvis, 2007: 530–531). However, ten Linnaean names: G. aristatum , G. hierosolymitanum , G. laevigatum , G. maritimum , G. palustre , G. purpureum , G. pusillum , G. rubrum , G. saxatile , and G. uliginosum , are untypified (see Jarvis, 2007; Ortega Olivençia & Devesa, 2007; Peruzzi & al., 2019) and are examined here. The name G. purpureum is currently accepted in Asperula L. (≡ Asperula purpurea (L.) Ehrend.…”

“…The present contribution is part of the ongoing work aimed at researching and identifying the original material on which the names of taxa occurring in Italy are based (Domina & al., 2012;Passalacqua & al., 2014;Peruzzi & al., 2015Peruzzi & al., , 2019Brundu & al., 2017). This research has recently been extended to North Africa (Domina & El Mokni, 2019).…”

“…This research has recently been extended to North Africa (Domina & El Mokni, 2019). With the exception of two names, all the species described by Carl Linnaeus reporting Sicily among the collection localities appear to have been typified (Jarvis, 2007;Peruzzi & al., 2015Peruzzi & al., , 2019. Only Asphodelus luteus L. (≡ Asphodeline lutea (L.) Rchb.)…”
