An introduction to the Barell body region by nature of injury diagnosis matrix

Abstract: Introduction:The Barell body region by nature of injury diagnosis matrix standardizes data selection and reports, using a two dimensional array (matrix) that includes allInternational Classification of Diseases(ICD)-9-CM codes describing trauma.Aim:To provide a standard format for reports from trauma registries, hospital discharge data systems, emergency department data systems, or other sources of non-fatal injury data. This tool could also be used to characterize the patterns of injury using a manageable num… Show more

“…The crash severity behaviour of non-motorized road users has also been extensively investigated (Chong et al, 2010;Tarko and Azam, 2011;Eluru et al, 2008). Injuries described in the legislative scale are classified according to their nature and the body location in order to reduce the number of injuries on the legal scale into a manageable number of diagnostic categories, inspired by the diagnostic matrix of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9-CM codes developed by Barell et al (2002). Specifically, a two-dimensional array is used to describe each injury.…”

“…Unintentional injury visits were defined as visits with primary E-codes in the range of 800-929.9, and intentional injury visits as those with E-codes in the range of 950-978. Categories of E-codes relating mechanisms, body regions, and tissue injuries were developed based on matrices recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) 16 and Barrel et al 17 NCHS coding rules for the place of occurrence of an injury were revised every two years during our study period; therefore, for consistency, we recoded all place of occurrence codes to "home," "school/daycare," "public," "other," and "unknown" (not missing). The location of injury was "unknown" for 23% of records.…”

“…A sports injury was defined according to the recommendation made by the Council of Europe as ''any injury occurring as a result of sports activity and causing one or more of the following: the subject had to stop sports activity and/or could not fully participate in the next planned sports activity and/or could not go to work the next day and/or needed medical attention and /or suffered from pain or stiffness during 10 subsequent days while participating in sports" [11]. Injury report included type of injury and its anatomic location according to a modification of the ''Barell body region by nature of injury diagnosis matrix" [12]. The Barell matrix, designed by the Israeli Ministry of Health and a special medical team of the Israeli Defense Forces, provides information regarding anatomic locations of injuries (e.g.…”
