An interview study of pregnant women who were provided with indoor air quality measurements of second hand smoke to help them quit smoking

Abstract: BackgroundMaternal smoking can cause health complications in pregnancy. Particulate matter (PM2.5) metrics applied to second hand smoke (SHS) concentrations provide indoor air quality (IAQ) measurements and have been used to promote smoking behaviour change among parents of young children. Here, we present the qualitative results from a study designed to use IAQ measurements to help pregnant women who smoke to quit smoking.MethodsWe used IAQ measurements in two centres (Aberdeen and Coventry) using two interve… Show more

“…With IAQ measurements for 1800 households at baseline, the study will provide a large dataset on the magnitude of SHS exposure within the home, as well as any key issues around IAQ measurement, in Bangladesh. IAQ feedback has a potential to bring about change in smoking behaviour in or around the home for some individuals [50], thus can complement other community-based interventions such as M4bH.…”

“…Nevertheless, the variety of both experts interviewed, and of relevant aspects touched on during the interviews, undoubtably enrich understanding, much like other qualitative work with just as many participants. 57 Moreover, the concept of data saturation based on pre-set numbers, whilst valid in most instances, still remains a relative concept. This is demonstrated, for example, by Guest et al.…”

“…2 Other measures include, the promotion of smoke free homes during pregnancy and beyond. Such measures could potentially avoid some of the problems associated with the policy of singling out pregnant women for routine carbon monoxide screening [36]. 3 There is currently no evidence regarding the extent to which NICE Guidelines on smoking cessation during pregnancy have been implemented nationally but the policy has been adopted by a number of NHS Trusts including South Tees NHS Foundation Trust [52], South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust [53], NHS Scotland [40] and NHS Wales [44] among others.…”
