An Internet of Things (IoT) Reference Model for an Infectious Disease Active Digital Surveillance System

Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) technological assistance for infectious disease surveillance is urgently needed when outbreaks occur, especially during pandemics. The IoT has great potential as an active digital surveillance system, since it can provide meaningful time-critical data needed to design infectious disease surveillance. Many studies have developed the IoT for such surveillance; however, such designs have been developed based on authors' ideas or innovations, without consideration of a specific reference m… Show more

“…Disease-specific surveillance, which is the traditional type of surveillance, has existed for many years and was the chief component of public health strategies [ 14 ]. This type of surveillance data is considered accurate [ 36 ]; however, they do not identify emerging infectious diseases because of limited resources, time, and reporting systems [ 16 ]. Timeliness and sensitivity are the most essential features of surveillance systems to detect outbreaks and identify health threats early.…”

“…Outbreak and an emerging public health threat detected (ie, SARS c ) [ Digital surveillance conducted using either passive or active approaches for data collection has become essential for infectious disease surveillance [16]. Passive surveillance is inexpensive and provides critical information for monitoring community health compared with active surveillance as critical data are reported by multiple health institutions such as hospitals, clinics, and public health units.…”

“…The utilisation of digital health tools during the global pandemic has exhibited their efficacy in fighting, mitigating, and controlling the transmission of emerging infectious diseases [2]. There is a significant potential for adopting digital surveillance as a valuable tool in monitoring and controlling infectious diseases [4].…”

“…However, LoRaWANs have a weakness in terms of their security key management [12][13][14][15]. This weakness has become a technical challenge since data security and privacy are essential aspects of IoT implementation [16][17][18][19][20].…”
