An interferometric analysis method for radio impulses from ultra-high energy particle showers

Abstract: We present an interferometric technique for the reconstruction of ultra-wide band impulsive signals from point sources. This highly sensitive method was developed for the search for ultrahigh energy neutrinos with the ANITA experiment but is fully generalizable to any antenna array detecting radio impulsive events. Applications of the interferometric method include event reconstruction, thermal noise and anthropogenic background rejection, and solar imaging for calibrations. We illustrate this technique with a… Show more

“…For each event, the polar and azimuthal angles of a putative source are then assigned to that particular ( θ , φ ) grid pixel, out of the 180 × 360 tested, which gives the highest total cross‐correlation scriptC. More extensive details on the construction of the ANITA interferometric map can be found in the literature [ Romero‐Wolf et al , ].…”

“…The geodetic positions in each case are given according to the estimated location of X max . Figure 1 shows the field-strength waveforms for all of the events, derived from coherent beam forming [9], with the instrumental response then deconvolved. Both Hpol and Vpol are plotted.…”

“…Table I shows characteristics of the three stratospheric events. Angles of arrival relative to the payload horizontal and their standard errors are determined through pulsephase interferometric mapping [9]. Distances to various integrated atmospheric column depths X, including the approximate depth of shower maximum X max , assuming a shower energy of ∼10 18 eV, are given along the track, based on a standard atmosphere model for Antarctica, and with uncertainties primarily dominated by the angle-ofarrival uncertainty.…”

“…Figure 4 shows pointing resolution determined by using the Western Antarctic Ice Seet (WAIS) Divide pulser data. Here, the directions of the received radio pulses were obtained by the interferometry technique which is the kernel of ANITA data analysis [18], and the results show excellent pointing capability of ANITA-4; angular resolutions for vertical and horizontal-directions are σ θ = 0.15 • and σ φ = 0.5 • , respectively. Figure 5 shows a couple of preliminary candidate events detected by ANITA-4; one predom-…”
