In this paper we present Hyvve as a flexible, distributed, modular lighting system. Our experiences with designing various intelligent lighting environments taught us that the available equipment is often cumbersome and puzzling to install. Moreover software applications to control lighting equipment often do not provide the freedom the designer requires. Hyvve provides an infrastructure that combines both hard-and software. It consists of hexagonal-shaped ceiling tiles that comprise of a wireless node and three warm white, three cool white LEDs and two LED drivers. Sensors can be connected to the tile by means of various sensor boxes. JAVA based software packages facilitate easy set up and control of the Hyvve system. These packages allow for programming new applications and behaviors into the system. To exemplify the versatility of the system we present three different applications. The showcases corroborate the flexible, modular, and aesthetic qualities of Hyvve as a versatile tool for designing lighting environments.

Over the past decade, engineers and scientists dedicated a significant amount of effort and time to enhance an indoor system embedded with the state-of-the-art automation. Through innovative implementation of sensors, IoT and machine learning algorithm, the designing of indoor lighting control systems evolved over the period. Our research is based upon the development of a highly intelligent lighting system that will be cost effective and at the same time easily accessed in a remote mode. Devices like Ultra-wide band sensors and Lux sensors were collected and utilized in the designing of the system to retrieve information about the user's location and existing brightness in the room, respectively. These data were then preprocessed, scaled and transmitted to various machine learning algorithms to predict suitable lighting condition. The application of our proposed lighting system will always keep the brightness range to a recommended level of 200-400 Lux which is extremely compatible for its use in homes, offices, schools and high rage apartments. In addition, the remote access facility allows users to operate the system anywhere in the world providing user experience beyond imagination. Lastly, as the system comprises of low-cost components that are also easily replaceable and only provide lighting when needed, it can provide savings in terms of cost and power.

This paper presents a dynamically adaptive proximity controller (APC) to balance energy consumption and user comfort of computer screens in office environments. Our APC system detects desk activities, such as working with the computer screen (screen on) and being away (screen off) and controls screens accordingly. Ultrasound range (USR) sensors were used to measure user proximity. To compensate for USR measurement errors, APC timing parameters were dynamically adapted and previous screen switch-off operations corrected using implicit user feedback. The feedback was obtained from proximity variance increases due to user movement following erroneous control operations. System performance and user comfort were evaluated in a real-life intervention study with 12 participants during 19 days. Detection accuracy was up to 98 %. Energy savings of up to 21 % were obtained by comparing intervention and baseline measurements. User responses showed that the APC system could yield energy savings, while maintaining user comfort when assessed using pre-and post-intervention questionnaires. The implicit feedback control is suitable to reduce system commissioning effort.
