In this study, a non-preemptive M/G/1 queueing model of a spectrum handoff scheme for cognitive wireless networks is proposed. Because spectrum handoff gives secondary users an opportunity to carry on their transmissions, it is crucially important to determine the actions of primary users. In our queueing model, prioritized data traffic is utilized to meet the requirements of the secondary users. These users' packets are categorized into three different priority classes: urgent, real-time, and non-real time. Urgent data packets have the highest priority, while non-real time data packets have the lowest priority. Riverbed (OPNET) Modeler simulation software was used to simulate both reactive and proactive decision spectrum handoff schemes. The simulation results were consistent with the analytical results obtained under different load and traffic conditions. This study also revealed that the cumulative number of handoffs can be drastically decreased by exploiting priority classes and utilizing a decent spectrum handoff strategy, such as a reactive or proactive decisionbased strategy.

Cognitive radio is a new technology that improves spectrum utilization by allowing secondary users to use licensed channels in an opportunistic manner. Because primary users have a right to use their licensed channels at any time, it is necessary for secondary users to stop their transmissions or to continue their transmissions in other channels in case of action of primary users. The event of changing channel for secondary users is known as spectrum handoff. Spectrum handoff for medium access protocols is an emerging topic because of the increasing spectrum scarcity. In this paper, simulation model of a cognitive radio network that consists of primary users and secondary users is considered. Riverbed Modeler Simulation Software is used for simulation scenarios. Secondary users are designed to make spectrum handoff between time slots of primary users with reactive decision spectrum handoff. It is clearly seen that number of handoff is significantly decreased by means of instant sensing based reactive spectrum handoff.

ÖZBilişsel radyo, frekans bantlarındaki kullanılmayan ya da az kullanılan kısımların verimli bir biçimde kullanılmasını sağlayan yeni bir teknoloji olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Kablosuz bilişsel radyo ağları, ikincil kullanıcılarının çeşitli sezme teknikleriyle frekans bantlarını dinleyerek spektrumun boş ya da az kullanılan kısımlarından fırsatçı bir şekilde yaralanmasını hedeflemektedir. Bu amaçla, ikincil kullanıcıların çeşitli sebeplerden dolayı kullandığı frekans kanalından diğer bir boş kanala geçiş işlemi spektrum el değiştirme olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Spektrum el değiştirme işleminin gerçekleştiği durumların başında, ikincil kullanıcılara tahsis edilen frekans kanallarının tekrar birincil kullanıcıların hizmetine sunulması durumu gelmektedir. Erişim noktaları tarafından karar verilen spektrum el değiştirme işlemi için çeşitli yöntem ve teknikler kullanılmaktadır. Öncelik kuyrukları, ikincil kullanıcıların kendi aralarındaki iletim sırasını belirlemek için oldukça önemlidir. Spektrum el değiştirme işleminin gerçekleşme kararının alınması için, yapay zekâ tekniklerinden yararlanılmaktadır. Wireless cognitive radio networks aims to take advantage of vacant or under-utilized portions of the spectrum by allowing secondary users to sense the frequency bands with various sensing techniques in an opportunistic manner. Spectrum handoff is described as channel switching of secondary users while transmitting for a variety of reasons. Spectrum handoff process mostly occurs when a frequency channel allocated to secondary user is required to be utilized by primary users. Various methods and techniques are used for spectrum handoff process that is decided by access points. Priority queues are quite important for secondary users to determine the order of transmissions among themselves. For the decision of the realization of spectrum handoff process, artificial intelligence techniques are utilized. In this work, studies related to wireless cognitive radio based spectrum handoff process for priority queues and artificial intelligence techniques are investigated.
