An Intelligent Luminance Control Method for Tunnel Lighting Based on Traffic Volume

Abstract: This paper presents an intelligent control method for tunnel lighting based on traffic volume. The monitoring data for a period of 12 days of the Chibai tunnel (located in the Jilin province of China) under different weather conditions was selected as the case study. The data used in the analysis included traffic volume, vehicle speed, the time of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) operating at their lowest luminance level, and the average time interval between two consecutive vehicles. The traffic flow analysis ind… Show more

“…In [ 13 ], the authors provide an overview of an innovative approach for effective cross-network information dissemination (quick and inexpensive) of traffic alerts using VANET network architecture. In [ 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 ] the authors describe a new intelligent street lighting system integrated with VANET technology in the smart city context. The paper proposes a system able to tune the LED lamp automatically according to environment luminance changes.…”

“…In order to solve this problem in the application of operating tunnels, a noise prediction model based on traffic volume, vehicle speed and vehicle type needs to be studied [41]. With this prediction model, a data compensation method should be proposed to compensate for the measurement error caused by unavoidable noise.…”

“…As a result, public administrations in countries throughout the world are becoming aware of the intimate relationship between safe tunnels and economical and environmental sustainability. Given this scenario, researchers are searching for ways to reduce the lighting requirements of tunnels [5,6,7,8], and improve the efficiency of electrical installations [9,10,11,12], as well as the optical properties of the tunnel elements such as the pavement [13,14,15,16]. However, the most important milestone has been the irruption of strategies to introduce sunlight inside the tunnels themselves.…”
