Vital sign monitoring outside the clinical environment based on wearable sensors ensures better support in assessing a patient’s health condition, and in case of health deterioration, automatic alerts can be sent to the care providers. In everyday life, the users can perform different physical activities, and considering that vital sign measurements depend on the intensity of the activity, we proposed an architecture based on the multi-agent paradigm to handle this issue dynamically. Different types of agents were proposed that processed different sensor signals and recognized simple activities of daily living. The system was validated using a real-life dataset where subjects wore accelerometer sensors on the chest, wrist, and ankle. The system relied on ontology-based models to address the data heterogeneity and combined different wearable sensor sources in order to achieve better performance. The results showed an accuracy of 95.25% on intersubject activity classification. Moreover, the proposed method, which automatically extracted vital sign threshold ranges for each physical activity recognized by the system, showed promising results for remote health status evaluation.

Optimizing Design of Smart Workplace through Multi-Objective Programming

Smart environments have proven very supportive to the improvement of the performance of people in different workplaces. Plenty of applications have been introduced spanning different settings including healthcare, ambient assisted living, homes, offices, and manufacturing environment, etc. However, subjectivity and ambiguity prevail in the majority of research, and still, up to date, rare approaches found quantitatively and objectively constructing or assessing the impact of smart enabling technologies on the performance of the subject environment. Further, no approaches have considered optimizing the adoption of those smart technologies with respect to objectives achievement. This article presents a novel optimization methodology for designing a smart workplace environment in conditions of ambiguity or fuzziness. The methodology begins with defining and weighing the overall goals and objectives of the workplace. The Prometthe multi-criterion decision-making technique is used to weigh the operational objectives with respect to the overall workplace goals. Next, the relation among basic building blocks of the model; namely: the operational objectives, smartness features, and smart enabling technologies are quantified, utilizing fuzzy relations. Then, the fuzzy goal programming techniques will be utilized to optimize the impact relation values while considering the budget constraint. The proposed optimization methodology is implemented on the development and optimization of the smart clinic, as a typical instance of the workplace.

Electronic technology plays a vital role in healthcare, not only for sensory equipment but also for communication and recording. As a result, the Internet of Things (IoT) is the most recent communication breakthrough in healthcare. In this work, we present a system that tracks patient health using a Blynk application, a micro-controller as a communication gateway, and sensors. When the output of the detector changes, a buzzer is embedded into the controller to alert the nursing staff. The sensor connects to a micro-controller, which is then interfaced with the liquid-crystal display (LCD) panel and wireless local area network (LAN) to provide notifications. An alert will be sent to the doctor through IoT if the system detects a change in the patient’s pulse rate or blood pressure, and the patient’s heartbeat, blood pressure, and body temperature will be displayed in real-time via Cloud. As a result, an IoT-based patient health monitoring system could save lives by efficiently monitoring patients’ health in real- time.
