An Integrated Relapse Prevention and Relationship Safety Intervention for Women on Methadone: Testing Short-Term Effects on Intimate Partner Violence and Substance Use

Abstract: This study tests the feasibility, safety, and short-term preliminary effects of a relapse prevention and relationship safety (RPRS) intervention in reducing drug use and the experience of intimate partner violence (IPV) among women on methadone. For this randomized controlled trial, 34 women who met IPV and drug use criteria were randomly assigned to either the RPRS condition (n = 16) or a one-session informational control (IC) condition (n = 18). RPRS participants were more likely than IC participants to repo… Show more

“…39 All interventions were conducted with substance abuse treatment populations. Only two of the intervention studies found significant effects for reducing IPV; 40,41 however, one of these had a small sample size (n = 34) 40 and one lacked a control group. 41 Nine of the 11 studies tested trauma informed group-based intervention models (i.e., Seeking Safety, Trauma Recovery Empowerment Model [TREM] and the Triad Group model).…”

“…Studies published since our previous review Gilbert and colleagues 150 conducted a pilot study using a randomised controlled trial design to test the feasibility, safety and short-term preliminary effects of a relapse prevention and relationship safety (RPRS) intervention in reducing drug use and partner violence among women in methadone maintenance treatment programmes (MMTPs); the geographical region was not reported. The RPRS intervention consisted of eleven 2-hour group sessions and one individual session.…”

[162][163][164][165][166] Five studies (four RCTs) measured the effects of the intervention on depression, 126,[142][143][144][145][146]150,157 with the betterquality studies showing smaller effect sizes. Four studies (two RCTs) 138,140,[143][144][145][146]152,153,157 measured the effects of the intervention on self-esteem.…”
