Costs to replace obsolete parts are estimated to exceed $10 billion annually for military expenditures. 1 Other industries experience high costs related to obsolete parts as well. [2][3][4][5] Synergies between Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and modular design concepts should be leveraged to reduce those costs early in the design process. To date, obsolescence management, MBSE, and modularity have been studied, advanced, and presented in a mostly disjunct manner. Consequently, work to synergize these areas specifically to mitigate obsolescence impacts is lacking. The research presented herein illuminates that the untapped synergy at the nexus of obsolescence management, MBSE, and modular design can be leveraged to enhance strategic management of obsolescence. Borrowing from the modular software engineering "container" concept 6 , the MBSE container modeling approach presented provides systems engineers, architects, and designers with a novel method to influence the system design by minimizing the number of system modules affected by obsolescence. By applying this model-based strategic obsolescence management approach early in the system architecting and design stages, system engineering teams can reduce the associated complexity, lifecycle costs, and risk of obsolete parts replacement. The management of production and inventory control associated activities in remanufacturing production system has received attention by practitioners in the last two decades. This is due to the increased productivity, limited supply of virgin materials, stringent environmental requirements for product disposal and treatment as well as substatial change in global sustainability regulations. In order to constantly attain the supply chain cost savings for manufacturing operations, an integrated production planning model in remanufacturing by considering component obsolescence is developed. The aim of this developed model is to minimise an overall costs for production with remanufacturing operations. A numerical application is demonstrated to show its practical usefulness and flexibility in a remanufacturing production plan by considering different obsolete time periods for used components from returns streams. Finally, the contributions of this study and future works are discussed.

Nesta dissertação abordamos o problema de dimensionamento e sequenciamento de lotes com aceitação de pedidos. As demandas dos clientes são agregadas em pedidos, os quais podem ou não ser aceitos e devem ser entregues dentro de uma janela de tempo. Os itens são perecíveis e podem permanecer no estoque somente por um tempo determinado (shelf-life). O objetivo do problema é maximizar a receita gerada pelo atendimento dos pedidos, descontando os custos de estoque e das preparações da máquina. Para tratar o problema são propostas formulações matemáticas e abordagens heurísticas contendo uma etapa construtiva seguida por uma heurística de melhoramento. Testes computacionais foram realizados e os resultados obtidos foram analisados. As heurísticas obtiveram desempenho superior ao branch-and-cut do solver de otimização na obtenção de soluções de boa qualidade, no limite de tempo estabelecido.
