An Integrated Power Consumption Model for Communication and Transaction Based Applications

Abstract: In order to realize digital ecosystems, the total electric power consumption of computers and networks have to be reduced. In distributed systems, clients issue requests to servers and then servers send replies to clients. Here, application processes are composed of a pair of modules which mainly consume computation and communication resources, respectively. Based on the measurement of the power consumption of a server, we newly discuss a power consumption model of a server for applications. We propose an EPCL… Show more

“…CONCLUDING REMARKS In the SPC model for computation type applications [7]- [10], if at least one application process is performed on a server, the electric power is maximally consumed on the server. In current servers, the rotation speed of fans can be changed depending on the temperature of the servers and multi-core CPUs are equipped.…”

“…Here, the more number of processes are concurrently performed, the larger amount of electric power is consumed on a server since it takes longer time to perform each of the processes on the server. Based on the SPC model, algorithms to select a server in a set of possible servers are discussed to reduce the total power consumption of a cluster of servers for each type of application [7]- [10].…”

“…The simple power consumption (SPC) model [12], [16] and extended simple power consumption (ESPC) model [17] are discussed to show how a server consumes the electric power to perform computation type application processes. Scientific applications are typical examples of computation applications.…”

“…In this paper, we would rather discuss softwareoriented aspects of information systems to reduce the electric power consumption in a cluster of servers to realize the high performance and scalable information systems [10], [11]. Applications are classified into computation [12], [13], communication [14], storage [15] and general [16] type applications.…”
