An integrated on-board charger with direct grid connection for battery electrical vehicle

Abstract: This paper presents a topology of an onboard charger with direct grid connection for battery electrical vehicle in which the system components are adapted and optimized by integrating the electrical machine and the voltage source inverter of the traction drive into the charging strategy. The particular safety issues concerning the impact of the common mode voltage in the charging operation are pointed out and its solution of integrating a filter capacitor between the protection earth conductor and the neutral … Show more

“…Since typically some small parasitic capacitances exist between the chassis of EV and its battery, this can cause problems in battery management system, as well as high displacement currents that can flow through the protection earth conductor. These currents can significantly exceed the permitted limit that is set due to safety concerns if a proper mitigating technique is not employed (one of these may be the integration of a filter capacitor between the protection earth conductor and the neutral conductor [4]). …”

“…When a converter operates in buck or boost regime, the signal v i is delivered through a non-linear compensation block defined by (12) or (13), which are shown in the 'controller' area in Fig. 3.…”

“…With complementarity of operation, several components of system are shared. The integrated chargers' configurations can be divided into two major categories: Singlephase [1,2,6,[8][9][10][11] or three-phase fast-integrated chargers [1][2][3][4]12]. The integrated converters are connected to the main grid, so it is necessary that they are working with the possibility of power factor (PF) correction as is discussed in [13][14][15], where the authors paid attention to digitalised algorithms.…”

“…Its presence or absence has no impact on the principles of operation of the considered topologies, and similar to [7], [10], and [12], it is not used in the experimental setup. Meeting safety regulations with nonisolated charging could be achieved by various techniques, one of which is described in [26].…”
