An Integrated Modelling Approach to Urban Growth and Land Use/Cover Change

Abstract: Long-term sustainable development in developing countries requires researching and projecting urban physical growth and land use/land cover change (LUCC). This research fills a gap in the literature by exploring the issues of modelling coupled LUCC and urban growth, their causes, and the role of policymakers. Tabriz metropolitan area (TMA), located at north-west Iran, was chosen as a case study to design an integrated framework using four well-established methods: cellular automata (CA), Markov chains (MC), lo… Show more

“…In this case, the different processes involved in enhancing urbanization, such as infrastructural growth and improving transportation, should not have any negative impact on the environment; otherwise, it would be hard to achieve the different goals of sustainable development [38,39]. Conflicts and interactions between these aspects emerge because cities are, to a greater extent, very complex ecosystems that are usually impacted by different forces of cultural, environmental, and social-economic dimensions [18,40].…”

“…Land policies are usually associated with different aspects of land markets, taxes on real estate, general management and control of land use, and the provision of land for minority groups [55,56]. The paradigm of land management encompasses the different tasks or activities involved in land administration that guarantee appropriate management of rights, constraints, duties, and dangers with respect to people's property, land, or natural resources [35,40]. The idea of land covers both buildings and natural resources, making the whole built and natural world a part of it.…”

“…"Modelling" tools are the most commonly used tools; however, there has been an increase in "Monitoring" tools in the last two decades, likely due to the rapid development of satellite-based technology [27]. Both "Modelling" and "Monitoring" tools only began being utilized (in the studies included in this paper) in 1991.…”

“…Space allocation of urban land is usually conducted through land use change or growth simulation models [20,21]. Urban growth simulations can predict areas that are likely to become urban lands and are widely used for space allocation of new urban land [22,23]. Moreover, if we count the simulated new urban lands by administrative division, we can directly obtain its quota, strengthening the synergy between the quota and space allocations of new urban land.…”
