Digital twin-based sustainable intelligent manufacturing: a review

As the next-generation manufacturing system, intelligent manufacturing enables better quality, higher productivity, lower cost, and increased manufacturing flexibility. The concept of sustainability is receiving increasing attention, and sustainable manufacturing is evolving. The digital twin is an emerging technology used in intelligent manufacturing that can grasp the state of intelligent manufacturing systems in real-time and predict system failures. Sustainable intelligent manufacturing based on a digital twin has advantages in practical applications. To fully understand the intelligent manufacturing that provides the digital twin, this study reviews both technologies and discusses the sustainability of intelligent manufacturing. Firstly, the relevant content of intelligent manufacturing, including intelligent manufacturing equipment, systems, and services, is analyzed. In addition, the sustainability of intelligent manufacturing is discussed. Subsequently, a digital twin and its application are introduced along with the development of intelligent manufacturing based on the digital twin technology. Finally, combined with the current status, the future development direction of intelligent manufacturing is presented.

Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, focuses on intelligent and smart manufacturing. This article investigates a smart design performance measurement approach, which can be utilized to support performance measurement implementation during a collaborative design process. First, we develop a smart product design framework with Industry 4.0 enabling technologies to support key design stages in an iterative fashion. Second, based on this framework, we propose a smart design performance measurement approach to potentially support a smart product design project management via its performance management. Third, we adapt our existing design performance measurement, for a traditional design environment into a smart design environment at its early stage to test its feasibility. This approach features integration of a flexible performance measurement setup, a multi-feedback design performance measurement mechanism and a multiple design performance measurement results presentation which allows the design performance measurement approach to produce flexible and customized operations by connecting design performance measurement with the stage-based design objectives, balancing design performance measurement feedbacks through interoperability between collaborative design team members and providing real-time design performance measurement results to guide design activities. An empirical industrial evaluation case study indicates that the proposed design performance measurement approach can support design team members in improving their collaborative design performance.

The increasing industrial relevance of connected smart product systems, enhanced individualized customer requirements, regulatory boundary conditions as well as advanced value networks and volatile international markets determine a new level of engineering complexity. Current engineering processes are enabled by a large number of IT applications, which are partially orchestrated by product lifecycle management solutions. Considering the dramatically increasing complexity, the IT applications are often not adequately connected as a whole, leading to interruptions in the process chains and finally resulting in quality problems, time expenditure, and additional costs.To support seamless engineering processes, a sufficiently linked information system structure is necessary. Due to the often-existing best-of-breed solutions and historically grown IT infrastructures, the direct point-to-point coupling of IT systems among each other requires disproportionately high efforts. As an approach to improve the existing situation, integration platforms utilizing loose coupling of individual heterogeneous engineering IT applications by semantic web technologies could be used to create a comprehensive, linked engineering data structure.This paper presents a conceptual IT-Service approach that utilizes this linked data structure to address problems in the area of information retrieval, data exchange, and data quality. A fundamental service function enables easy access to the information scattered throughout the whole organization. This approach could contribute to a high level of transparency within the company's internal processes and relationships between data across individual engineering IT applications. The proposed concepts for IT platform services facilitate the exchange of data between different software applications and the standardized checking and documentation of data quality.
