An Integrated Approach to an Assessment of Bottlenecks for Navigation on Riverine Waterways

Abstract: Water transport, both sea and inland, is the cheapest, least invasive, and safest option for non-standard loads; hence, it is important to increase the percentage share of inland waterway transport on the rivers of Central and Eastern Europe. Transporting cargo is particularly difficult on shallow waterways because rivers overloaded with sediment determine the vertical parameters on inland waterways. A ship’s safe manoeuvrability depends on the available water depth of the navigational area concerning the vess… Show more

“…For this, the initiative set out by the commission was around various domains and areas with the highest added values, including developing smart infrastructure, technological innovation, environmental performance, functioning of the single market, human factor, and integration into the multimodal transport and logistics chains (European Commission, 2018). Given the prospects and challenges the sector is encountering, the commission proposed an update and renewal of the NAIADES programme until 2027, leading to the NAIDES III support programmes to further boost the transport network's future-proof (Schoneich et al, 2022). Compared to its successor (NAIDES II), the action plans of the NAIDES III were a modification of the transportation system to zero-emission and a modal shift concept within the EU (Plotnikova et al, 2022).…”

“…Since fitting significantly to a large extent on the political agenda of many developed countries as an efficient and climate-friendly alternative transport mode, academic research on shifting freight from road to waterborne transport has attracted considerable attention from academic researchers. Previous literature research studies have highlighted significant issues and challenges in the modal shift of freight to waterways (Roso et al, 2020;Schoneich et al, 2022).…”

“…As the climate warms up, risks of all kinds are increased, from coastal erosion brought on by rising sea levels to more regular extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts or floods(Hunt et al, 2022). Several academic literatures have assessed the impact of climate change on the functionality of the inland waterway transportation system, includingJonkeren et al (2014),Kuklickea and Demeritt (2016),Liu et al (2019), andSchoneich et al (2022).…”

“…Исследования кинематической структуры потока и русловых деформаций при неустановившемся режиме движения воды в нижних бьефах гидроузлов в последние годы проводились в ограниченных объемах [18], [19]. Вместе с тем проблемы обеспечения судоходства в нижних бьефах гидроузлов, расположенных вне зоны подпора, остаются по-прежнему актуальными [20]. До настоящего времени детальных исследований по вопросам изучения параметров транспорта наносов в нижних бьефах гидроузлов практически не проводилось.…”
