α-Mangostin-rich extract (AME) shows promise as a functional ingredient for cancer chemotherapy. Here, we encapsulated AME in our originally designed antioxidant nanoparticles (Nano AOX ) to increase its solubility and prevent oxidative degradation (AME@Nano AOX ). In this study, two types of selfassembled polymers containing nitroxide radicals were engineered. These polymers were self-assembled into nanoscale particles in aqueous media, entrapping AME (abbreviated as AME@Nano AOX (B) and AME@Nano AOX (G)). These formulations considerably improved the stability of AME against oxidative degradation and exhibited different release profiles of α-mangostin under different pH conditions. Furthermore, AME-encapsulated nanoparticles exhibited potent cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines, including human breast cancer (MCF-7), human lung cancer (A549), human colon cancer (Caco-2), human cervical cancer (HeLa), and human liver cancer (HepG2) cell lines, with minimal cytotoxicity in normal human mammary epithelial cells (hTERT-HME1), thus providing a high selectivity index (SI). These results indicated the promising feature of AME-encapsulated antioxidant nanoparticles (AME@Nano AOX ) for cancer chemotherapy.

Microalgae are a group of microorganisms containing chlorophyll A, which are highly photosynthetic and rich in nutrients. And they can produce multiple bioactive substances (peptides, proteins, polysaccharides, and fatty acids) for biomedical applications. Despite the unique advantages of microalgae‐based biotherapy, the insufficient treatment efficiency limits its further application. With the development of nanotechnology, the combination of microalgae and biomaterials can improve therapeutic efficacies, which has attracted increasing attention. In this microalgal‐biomaterials hybrid system, biomaterials with excellent optical and magnetic properties play an important role in biological therapy. Microalgae, as a natural vehicle, can increase oxygen content and alleviate hypoxia in diseased areas, further enhancing therapeutic effects. In this review, the synergistic therapeutic effects of microalgal‐biomaterials hybrid system in different diseases (cancer, myocardial infarction, ischemia stroke, chronic infection, and intestinal diseases) are comprehensively summarized.

The success of graphene oxides has gained extensive research interests in developing novel 2D nanomaterials (NMs). WS2 nanosheets (NSs) are novel transition metal‐based 2D NMs, but their toxicity is unclear. In this study, we investigated the oral toxicity of WS2 NSs to mouse intestines. Male mice were administrated with vehicles, 1, 10, or 100 mg/kg NSs via intragastric route, once a day, for 5 days. The results indicate that the NSs did not induce pathological or ultrastructural changes in intestines. There were minimal changes of trace elements that the exposure did not induce W accumulation, and only Co levels were dose‐dependently increased. Lipid droplets were observed in all groups of mice, but lipidomics data indicate that WS2 NSs only significantly decreased four lipid species, all belonging to phosphatidylcholine (PC). The levels of proteins regulating autophagic lipolysis, namely, LC3, lysosomal associated membrane protein 2 (LAMP2) and perilipin 2 (PLIN2), were increased, but it was only statistically significantly different for LC3. The results of this study suggest that repeated intragastric exposure to WS2 NSs only induced minimal influences on pathological injury, trace element balance, autophagy, and lipid profiles in mouse intestines, indicating relatively high biocompatibility of WS2 NSs to mouse intestine via oral route.
