An innovative shape equation to quantify the morphological characteristics of parasitized red blood cells by Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax

Abstract: The morphology of red blood cells is affected significantly during maturation of malaria parasites, Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax. A novel shape equation is presented that defines shape of parasitized red blood cells by P. falciparum (Pf-red blood cells) and P. vivax (Pv-red blood cells) at four stages of infection. The Giemsa-stained thin blood films are prepared using blood samples collected from healthy donors, patients having P. falciparum and P. vivax malaria. The diameter and thickness of he… Show more

“…To determine the inhibitory effect of ASP3026 on Plasmodium growth, P. falciparum 3D7 parasites were synchronized to the ring stage and treated with ASP3026, and parasite maturation was monitored over 72 h. The parasites treated with solvent control could reproduce asexually, and the transition from trophozoite to schizont was observed in the Giemsa-stained blood smears ( 39 ). However, parasites treated with ASP3026 stopped growing completely until they eventually died (Figure 3A ).…”

“…The sample preparation, experimental set-up, 40,41 and stress-strain analysis [42][43][44][45][46] were widely defined in our previous studies. Briefly, eight male rats aged 8-10 weeks and weighing between 240 and 250 g were housed in groups of three in plastic cages.…”
