An Innovative Clinical Skills “Boot Camp” for Dental Medicine Residents

Abstract: During a 1-year hospital-based residency, dental residents are required to rotate through many departments including surgery, medicine, and emergency medicine. It became apparent that there was a gap between clinical skills knowledge taught in dental school curriculum and skills required for hospital-based patient care. In response, a simulation-based intensive clinical skill “boot camp” was created. The boot camp provided an intensive, interactive 3-day session for the dental residents. During the 3 days, res… Show more

“…Simulation-based education is an evolving alternative to the “see one, do one, teach one” method of dental education as simulation is safe and effective and addresses issues of patient care that students may not otherwise experience during their education. 1 The use of a standardized patient (a person coached to portray characteristics of a specified type of patient) is a form of simulation-based education that has been common in health professions education for decades. 2–4 Even the recording of such interactions has existed for many years.…”

“…In order to address the difficulties in the transition to internship, some medical schools have created capstone courses focused on communication, common problems, procedural skills, or some combination of topics for students entering internship. Elective courses for students entering dentistry [7], surgery [8][9][10][11][12], and obstetrics and gynecology [13][14][15] have been shown to increase confidence in procedural skills and communication. Similar courses in non-surgical specialties are not as common; however, their numbers are increasing.…”

“…There is a wide gap in student's knowledge regarding clinical skills not covered in a traditional medical school curriculum which makes it difficult for the junior doctors to successfully navigate through internship. 6 Despite improved curricula and emphasis on core skills, difficulties are faced during transition from medical students to interns 7,8 Clinical Skills Boot Camps and Simulated Internship Courses help medical undergraduate students in transitioning to clinical work. [9][10][11][12] Students attending such boot camps have reported higher confidence, improved performance and better preparedness in the targeted domains.…”
