An Innovative Approach to the Design of a National Probability Sample of Sexual Minority Adults

Abstract: Purpose: Sampling lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) people to recruit a national probability sample is challenging for many reasons, including the low base rate of LGB people in the population. To address this challenge, researchers have relied on diverse approaches to sampling LGB people. We aimed to test an innovative method to assemble a U.S. national probability sample of non-transgender sexual minority adults. Methods: Our approach used two phases. In Phase 1, we identified LGBT respondents in a probabilit… Show more

“…In the first phase, utilizing a question asked of all Gallup respondents in the Daily Tracking Survey (see Measures), all LGBT individuals were identified. In the second phase, respondents who identified as LGBT were assessed for eligibility for participation in the Generations study, and those eligible were invited to participate in the survey [ 44 ].…”

“…Typically, studies of sexual minorities do not include representative samples and when they do, they do not include sufficient numbers of sexual minorities to allow intersectional analysis (Meyer et al, 2020). The California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) is a large state survey allowing assessment of health disparities at the intersection of sexual identity and Latinx ethnicity.…”

“…The current study examined data from male participants in the Generations Study, which used a national probability sample of lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) adults in three age cohorts recruited from all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The study methods are described in detail elsewhere [23]. Three distinct age cohorts (ages 18-25, 34-41, and 52-59 at screening) were targeted that represent different historical periods which contextualized the experience of LGB adults in the U.S.…”
