With the exponential growth of mobile data, there are increasing interests to deploy small cells in millimeter wave (mmWave) bands to underlay the conventional homogeneous macrocell network as well as in exploiting device-to-device (D2D) communications to improve the efficiency of the multicast service that supports content-based mobile applications. To compensate for high propagation loss in the mmWave band, high-gain directional antennas have to be employed, while it is critical to optimize multicast service in order to improve the network performance. In this paper, an efficient multicast scheduling scheme is proposed for small cells in the mmWave band, called MD2D, where both D2D communications in close proximity and multi-level antenna codebook are utilized. Specifically, a user partition and multicast path planning algorithm is proposed to partition the users in the multicast group into subsets and to determine the transmission node for each subset, so as to achieve optimal utilization of D2D communications and multilevel antenna codebook. Then a multicast scheduling algorithm schedules the transmission for each subset. Furthermore, in order to optimize the network performance, the optimal choice of user partition thresholds is analyzed. Performance evaluation demonstrate that the MD2D achieves the best performance, in terms of network throughput and energy efficiency, compared with other existing schemes. MD2D improves the network throughput compared with the second-best scheme by about 27%.

A 60 GHz radio is an attractive technology in wireless home networks because it can provide high data rate up to a few Gbps. A 60 GHz network generally uses directional antennas and has a problem of neighbor discovery even though it has an advantage of high data transmissions. In particular, if a directional antenna is used in self-organized wireless adhoc networks, the neighbor discovery time and energy consumption can be significantly increased. To solve this problem, we propose a multi-band directional neighbor discovery scheme, in which management procedures are carried out by using the 2.4 GHz band with the omni-directional antennas whereas data transmissions are performed by using the 60 GHz band with directional antennas. Analytical models on the neighbor discovery time and energy consumption are also derived by considering assisted and beamforming periods in the neighbor discovery procedure through the omni-directional antenna and directional antenna. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme outperforms comparative schemes that use only directional beamforming in terms of the average neighbor discovery time and energy consumption.Index Terms-Directional antennas, mmWave ad-hoc networks, multi-band application, neighbor discovery, selforganization.0018-9545 (c)

A relay transmission is a promising technology to improve network performance in dynamic infrastructure. In this paper, we propose a distributed relay-assisted retransmission (DRR) scheme in multirate wireless home networks. The idea is to exploit overhearing nodes to retransmit on behalf of sender node after receiving the block acknowledgement (B-ACK) from destination node. For the first transmission, a basic relay (BR) node is used by considering the high data rate between source node and BR node. And then, for the retransmission, a retransmission relay (RR) node is used by considering the high data rate between RR node and destination node. The DRR scheme extends a distributed reservation protocol in WiMedia home networks and inquires the candidate relay node as BR nodes and RR nodes during beacon period. In addition, the DRR scheme can minimize control overhead for relay transmission because all nodes should send and listen to the beacon frames of neighbor nodes during beacon period. We also present the relay decision scheme and channel allocation procedure for maximizing the efficiency in the DRR scheme. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the DRR scheme can improve the overall throughput by 40% and reduce the energy consumption by 47% compared with nonrelay transmission schemes when the number of nodes increases.
