We have studied the CP violation discovery reach in neutrino oscillation experiment with superbeam, neutrino factory and monoenergetic neutrino beam from electron capture process. For NSI satisfying model-dependent bound for shorter baselines (like CERN-Fréjus set-up ) there is insignificant effect of NSI on the the discovery reach of CP violation due to δ. Particularly, for superbeam and neutrino factory we have also considered relatively longer baselines for which there could be significant NSI effects on CP violation discovery reach for higher allowed values of NSI. For monoenergetic beam only shorter baselines are considered to study CP violation with different nuclei as neutrino sources. Interestingly for non-standard interactions -εeµ and εeτ of neutrinos with matter during propagation in longer baselines in superbeam, there is possibility of better discovery reach of CP violation than that with only Standard Model interactions of neutrinos with matter. For complex NSI we have shown the CP violation discovery reach in the plane of Dirac phase δ and NSI phase φij. The CP violation due to some values of δ remain unobservable with present and near future experimental facilities in superbeam and neutrino factory . However, in presence of some ranges of off-diagonal NSI phase values there are some possibilities of discovering total CP violation for any δCP value even at 5σ confidence level for neutrino factory. Our analysis indicates that for some values of NSI phases total CP violation may not be at all observable for any values of δ. Combination of shorter and longer baselines could indicate in some cases the presence of NSI. However, in general for NSIs 1 the CP violation discovery reach is better in neutrino factory set-ups. Using a neutrino beam from electron capture process for nuclei 110 50 Sn and 152 Yb, we have shown the discovery reach of CP violation in neutrino oscillation experiment. Particularly for 110 50 Sn nuclei CP violation could be found for about 51% of the possible δ values for a baseline of 130 km with boost factor γ = 500. The nuclei 152 Yb is although technically more feasible for the production of mono-energetic beam, but is found to be not suitable in obtaining good discovery reach of CP

Abstract:We study the impact of one light sterile neutrino on the prospective data expected to come from the two presently running long-baseline experiments T2K and NOνA when they will accumulate their full planned exposure. Introducing for the first time, the bi-probability representation in the 4-flavor framework, commonly used in the 3-flavor scenario, we present a detailed discussion of the behavior of the ν µ → ν e andν µ →ν e transition probabilities in the 3+1 scheme. We also perform a detailed sensitivity study of these two experiments (both in the stand-alone and combined modes) to assess their discovery reach in the presence of a light sterile neutrino. For realistic benchmark values of the mass-mixing parameters (as inferred from the existing global short-baseline fits), we find that the performance of both these experiments in claiming the discovery of the CP-violation induced by the standard CP-phase δ 13 ≡ δ, and the neutrino mass hierarchy get substantially deteriorated. The exact loss of sensitivity depends on the value of the unknown CP-phase δ 14 . Finally, we estimate the discovery potential of total CP-violation (i.e., induced simultaneously by the two CP-phases δ 13 and δ 14 ), and the capability of the two experiments of reconstructing the true values of such CP-phases. The typical (1σ level) uncertainties on the reconstructed phases are approximately 40 0 for δ 13 and 50 0 for δ 14 .

Abstract:We compare the physics potential of two representative options for a SuperBeam in Europe, studying the achievable precision at 1σ with which the CP violation phase (δ) could be measured, as well as the mass hierarchy and CP violation discovery potentials. The first setup corresponds to a high energy beam aiming from CERN to a 100 kt liquid argon detector placed at the Pyhäsalmi mine (2300 km), one of the LAGUNA candidate sites. The second setup corresponds to a much lower energy beam, aiming from CERN to a 500 kt waterČerenkov detector placed at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (730 km). This second option is also studied for a baseline of 650 km, corresponding to the LAGUNA candidate sites of Umbria and the Canfranc underground laboratory. All results are presented also for scenarios with statistics lowered by factors of 2, 4, 8 and 16 to study the possible reductions of flux, detector mass or running time allowed by the large value of θ 13 recently measured.
